A Day In The Life Of A Local Radio Presenter:
“The Secret Diary of Richard Dodd
Aged..........
34 and 3/4

Richard ‘Dicky’ Dodd started out in radio in 1994 primarily as a way of funding his dream of owning a West Midlands Travel bus. He trawled the Midlands with his promotional company, Unique Ideas, launching anything that could possibly be launched – cars, restaurants, shops, bookies, ships… You name it. Dicky launched it.

He eventually found his way onto Wolverhampton’s 107.7 The Wolf where he enjoys the on air as well as the management side of things. He particularly enjoys being able to cage tardy sales folk and dishing out the odd bollocking to promo girls that just don’t cut the mustard.

Obviously, I joke. Rich is one of the nicest and most genuine chaps you are likely to have the pleasure of dealing with in this crazy radio world. And bloomin’ hard working to boot. His general day goes a little something like this…

04:15. The alarm goes off and take a while to register

04:30. I wake up and tippy-toe around the house trying not to wake wife Julie and kids – Reece and Sophie.

04:55. After showering and getting out of my bed attire into a more suitable ‘get-up’, I leave the house ready for another day of saving lives on the wireless

05:05. Stop off at the local Co-Op to pick up the morning papers, in search of some inspiration for the morning’s show

05:20. First thing’s first when I get into the studio. Put the kettle on. I have a cup of tea (1 sugar, milk) and wolf (geddit???) down some breakfast

05:30. Enter the studio which will be my sanctuary for the next few hours to prep the show

06:00. Go live on air, broadcasting to the lovely folk of Wolverhampton and the Black Country. The time always fly by cos we have such a laugh on air and the people of Wolvo always give us something to talk about, whether it’s celebrating the life of the Ring Road Tramp or reporting on a local attempted heist using a courgette as a weapon

10:00. Come off air and enter ‘The Office’ where all the official stuff goes on – paperwork, reports, finance. All that craziness. Far from the rock n roll of being on air but I love it all the same

13:00. This is my official finish time but I can’t remember the last time it happened

15:00. This is more like it. Leave for the day. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays I have to collect the kids so I’ll do this on the way home, sign a few autographs, have a few celebrity champagnes etc…

17:00. I am the cook, so I’ll knock together a Spag Bol. And if we’re lucky, spotted dick for pudding. Mmmmmm…

22:00. After a bit of quality time with the kids and the wife, it’s off to the sleepy hills for 6 hours kip before it all starts again.
